Toronto (in pictures)

October 6th, 2006

Our first hotel had a great view of the “new” city hall…

… and I finally found Baltika beer, which I drank in copious amounts on that trip to Russia last year. And yes, it was even better than I’d rememebred.

Apropos of nothing, we had a teeny tiny bottle of champagne.

I started a new sweater design in Curious Creek Oban in Glacier Lakes.

We walked down to the St. Lawrence market and had a picnic of aged cheddar and bread.

The view wasn’t the best, but the cheese was great!

More walking, down to the cool distillery area. We want to live there. Really. It’s very cool.

A few days later, we switched hotels into the coolest hotel ever, the Gladstone Hotel.

Our room had a “trophy” made out of mirrors. Very cool.

I didn’t take any photos of any of the great people we met up with. Amy Singer, Jillian Moreno, Steph, Stephanie(who has a horrible photo of me up on her site right now!) Shannon Okey, Kim Werker, Melissa, Meagan, and a lot more.

I didn’t take a lot of photos period.

But, we also had fantastic food. Did you know that Toronto seems to have the world’s best selection of French Fries? It’s true! Every fry we had was perfection! (Obviously, I didn’t exactly stick to my diet, but I wasn’t that bad either.) We went to “Lee”, Susur Lee’s “less upscale” dining experience. It was perfect. I had a drink made of cucumbers, and thought of Mandy the whole time. (She hates anything to do with cucumbers.) We bought a couple more monsters from the actual real-life Monster Factory. We did a lot of window shopping and I even bought some Koigu PPPM, of course.

The Curious Creek Oban Sweater
For those of you who have seen my black cashmere design from last week, this is the same sweater in the same size. The black one turned out perfectly, so I wrote up the pattern and am testing it out again. I’m also knitting the same sweater in Manos, one size larger, so it’s not so fitted. Obsession? Yes, I suppose. But, each one takes less than a week. Something about circular neck down sweaters just seems to fly.

The Oban sweater is nearly done. I have just the ribbing on one sleeve and the entire other sleeve, but since they’re cropped, it doesn’t take more than a couple of hours. And then, the finishing details, such as the button band and neckline.

I’m hoping this one will end up on Knitty in a future issue. It’s been too long since I’ve done a full garment design for anything other than books.

Speaking of books, one of my socks got accepted for a Vogue book project. Did I mention that already? But, a sock is quick and easy. A sock isn’t a sweater and doesn’t require the same level of time committment. Oof. I probably don’t need to say anything about how good it felt to get the BGK2 sweater handed off to Amy on Sunday. And, I’m really happy how it turned out. I used some details on it that I’d like to borrow for another design idea I’ve had. But, not any time soon. Oh no. I need a good bit of distance from that much sewing.

Back at Work

And, now, after a much-delayed flight, we’re back home and working as hard as always. Today, I’m doing everything I can to finish my book. Honest. And then I’m doing everything I can to finish the registration forms for the Emerald Lake Retreat for Make One. I’m hoping to get through it all today so I can be in the store tomorrow to take a look at inventory and ordering. I also have some work to do on the contracts for the Crochet book. So. I’m busy.

Sunday, we’re off to Edmonton for Thanksgiving for the night. And then we come back to Calgary on Monday. Fast trip, but it’ll be good to have the time with Sandra’s family.

I miss having time to email my friends, and I miss going to my dance classes. I miss being in the shop every day, and I miss feeling like I’m on top of stuff. It’s getting better with every item crossed off my to do list, but I’m looking forward to having just one job for a bit.

Of course, knowing me, that might never happen, eh?

I’m sorry I missed you two on Wednesday! As it turned out, I had to stay at work late that very day to catch up on everything I hadn’t done or wasn’t going to do while torturing… I mean, interviewing student candidates this past week. I was quite miffed.

    lovely to see you again.

LOL – I was just in TO 2 weekends ago, and the view out of the window from your first hotel looks exactly like the view out of my window – were you staying at the sheraton?

Say Something...
