Upward facing dog

August 6th, 2008

I went to yoga tonight for the first time in almost a year. Yoga is one of those things that I absolutely love to do. I feel incredible for the 80 minutes or so it takes us to get through the half primary and resting postures. And I love that yoga rush afterward. But I’ve had a hard time sticking with a consistent practice since I started back in 2003 or so.

Maybe this is my year.

What I discovered today is that my much heavier and much more out of shape body doesn’t bend like it used to. Surprise! It was actually pretty funny at times. I could remember twisting my back just so, and I’d start to move into it, and my back would cry out “STOP!”. Now, there’s not supposed to be pain involved in yoga, so I took it very very easy tonight, minding my lower back and last month’s pain.

And still, I’m pretty sore now, an hour later. And a little twitchy all over. It feels good. And I made a promise to myself to treat myself with a good yoga class more often. I want to get back into it, I really do. Discovering that I still had 7 pre-paid classes left certainly helps things.

Way to go! I tried yoga many years ago and quit after the instructor pushed me into a position my back didn’t like. So instead of yoga class, it was off to the chiropractor. I should try again (different studio, perhaps.) Too bad I don’t have any prepaid classes …
