The new-again me
I’m not sure why, this time at least, I’ve been able to stick to the weight watchers philosophy long enough to get oh-so-close to my goal weight. Maybe it’s easier to make long-term changes when everything else is in flux; my home, my city, my job, my entire life. Maybe I was just finally prepared to admit to myself the one cannot live – and fit into size 10 jeans – entirely on french fries and beer. (Shocking, isn’t it?)
In any case, I’m down nearly 40 pounds from last December. 40 pounds is approximately half a Cooper. For the record, Cooper’s rather large:
And although the rate of weight loss has been horrifyingly slow (aka, a plateau) for the past month, it’s really only been this week and the last where I’ve started feeling like a new and shiny person.
Instead of looking in the mirror and not recognizing myself for the weight I’d slowly put on over the past three years, I’ve been enjoying the reverse. Yeah, I’m wearing mediums now. And 8s. And those numbers suit me quite well. I’ve been able to fit into some much-loved but seldom-worn clothing from 2004, from 2005, and (optimistically) from 2006. I’ve had a blast just trying things on in nearly every store in Eaton Centre.
I still have another ten pounds to go before goal. That’ll put me towards the top end of ‘healthy’ for my age and height, and at a place I haven’t been since 2002. It might take months, especially losing just a half pound a week, but I’m ok with that. I’ve been focusing on making some long-term changes about how I view what I eat, about how I choose what to eat, and learning to listen to my body a little bit more closely.
I guess it’s not surprising, given all the evolutions in my life, that I feel like this weight loss is a physical expression of all those other changes. A new city, a new career path, some new understandings about my goals, my priorities, my histories. I feel like I’ve spent the last four years plowing through a dark tunnel of base survival. Now, there’s definitely a light, and it’s getting closer every minute. It’s actually possible I’m already in the light.
