The Griddle Hat: NowAvailable
Wow! Thanks for all your great suggestions, gang! I loved all of them and had a tough time deciding the right direction to take. One that came up again and again was the idea of “waffles”. Delicious, right? Well, there are already a ton of waffle related stitches and patterns, so my friend Ilan suggested I use something derivative; a griddle. After all, this does kind of look like a grid, and a waffle iron, so it works on two levels.
The pattern’s now available on Ravelry for $3.50 US. I’ve been working on this since the wee hours of the morning.
This super warm hat pattern makes the most of a funky crochet stitch. Worked in three colors with optional ear flaps, it’s cool and cozy on the chilliest winter days.
Two versions are provided; one with fun ear flaps and pompom ties, the other more plain. Take your pick and work one up for the guy or gal in your life – or yourself. It’ll only take a few evenings.
Not yet a crocheter? This hat is a challenging excuse to pick up that hook. You’ll want to master the basic stitches before beginning. This is not suitable for crochet newbies.
Materials
85 (120) yards each of 3 colors aran-weight yarn.
For ear flap version: 85 (120) additional yards of MC for pompoms and ties.
US H/5.0mm hook
yarn needle
Finished Size
S (M/L) to fit head circumference of 20 (22) in.
Finished circumference: 18 21 in.
Pattern is designed with 1-2 inches negative ease in mind.
Watch It On YouTube
I made my first real YouTube video to explain a trick for working rounds 4 and 5. This, in my opinion, is the trickiest part of the hat, so it might be of help for you too.

I can’t crochet to save my life, but I’ve passed the link on to a friend. Maybe I can talk my mom into making it for me!

The hat is so beautiful and I can crochet and knit, fortunately. The hat is on my list.
