WIP: slipper socks,Afghan style
Several years ago, my nephew worked over in Afghanistan, building runways and schools and other infrastructure projects. His parents, my half-brother and sister in law, visited at Christmas that year, and wore these lovely fair-isle slipper socks around the house.
As a knitter, I was kind of blown away. Sure, they were worked in a chunky acrylic instead of the wool I’d prefer. And the pattern was simple enough; just two colors. But I instantly thought of the possibilities of working instead in a solid and a hand-painted, or kettle dyed. And I thought also that these would make incredibly warm house socks for the cold winters here in Canada.
It only took me a few years, but I wrote up a pattern last winter and began knitting, using Manos and Brown Sheep Lamb’s Pride Bulky.
Notice, I say “BEGAN KNITTING”. These pictures, taken on December 28 of 2009, are still accurate. I’m exactly this far done on the project, somewhere past the heel placement on the first slipper.
I’m blogging this as a reminder to myself, that I still love the project, and I want to go back to it after finishing off the blue cabled sweater.
Speaking of cables, I’m just now at the point where I had been on the previous version, and it’s looking mighty nice. I came up with an idea for working some waist shaping into the pattern in a way that’s hopefully flattering and well-fitting. We shall see.
We’re hopefully off camping this weekend. Historically, I bring lots of knitting but don’t actually knit. Because I didn’t get a lot written this morning on the Book of Mitten Anatomy, I’ll probably be bringing some basic yarn and dpns to knit a simple mitten or two to test out the blueprint section.
