The Watershed Knit-along

October 19th, 2010

WatershedWatershed

A few weeks ago, my friend Amanda mentioned that she wanted to knit Watershed before the holiday season… would I be interested in hosting a knit-along?

Absolutely!

Watershed is a perfect knit-along project for a few key reasons:

  1. It’s small. With the smaller sizes requiring 400 yards or less, Watershed is a great low-commitment garment. Before you get bored, you’re casting off!
  2. It’s just hard enough. The pattern features several techniques that are great to learn, but may be new for some knitters. That gives me a lot to blog about; provisional cast ons, working from charts, knitting on borders… you name it.
  3. It’s a great use for a special yarn. Since you just need a few skeins, you can splurge on something precious, or find something great in your stash.
  4. It makes a great gift. Easy to fit and quick to knit, you’ve got time before the holiday season.
  5. It’s the perfect thing to wear with that LBD. Need a holiday pick-me-up for your favorite outfit? Watershed makes a great party-friendly addition to your perfect little black dress.

This is going to be a semi-hosted knit-along. I’ll be taking an active role here on the blog and in the newly created Indigirl Designs forum on Ravelry.

We’ve set a cast on date of November 1. If you want to participate, you’ll need to buy the pattern if you haven’t already. And you’ll probably want to join the group on Ravelry so you can chat with others about your progress.

In the time leading up to November 1, I’ll be posting on two topics:

  • How to pick your yarn
  • How to pick your size

This will get you really set to start on November 1.

How long will it take to knit? It depends on your knitting speed and free time. I knit the original Watershed in about 4 evenings. It’s not a lot of yardage, but I’d expect most people to finish in about 2 or 3 weeks.

Please join us!

I want to! I just bought the pattern and I’m going to SAFF this weekend so I can get some new yarn just for it. Can’t wait to start. I have yet to actually finish (have started plenty) a fitted garment, so I think doing it as a KAL, and it being not too big, I will have a much better chance of finishing it.
